Listservs and targeted messaging

Mailing lists

A listserv is an electronic mailing list which allows one message to be distributed automatically to a predetermined group of people. Lists can be requested by submitting a request via the Postmaster form. Please include the following information:

  • Your name, telephone number and department
  • Your desired list name
  • Purpose of your list
  • You must also specify who will be allowed to send messages to this list: Anyone in the world; just the group members; just a few people.

The University Postmaster will contact you to discuss available list options and recommend the listserv that would best fit your purposes. We currently offer two alternatives: Pantheon Lists and Mailman Lists. Which you use is heavily dependent on your desired features and security concerns.

  • Pantheon Lists
Pantheon lists have addresses of the form listname@panlists.yale.edu. They are easier to manage, but do not have many of the customization features that Mailman offers. Panlists are managed by an online interface called the Pantheon List Management Tool.

  • Mailman Lists
Mailman lists have addresses listname@mailman.yale.edu. They have many more features such as moderation and archiving, but are slightly more complicated to administer. The Mailman list management interface is not protected by Central Authentication Service (CAS) and thus requires a separate password.

Messaging service

Communications provides a messaging service that supports large-scale email messaging to pre-defined, requester-provided, or ad-hoc lists for specific, identified audiences. For information about using these services, visit the Communications website or call 203-432-1081.

Administrative review and appropriate use

All lists are subject to review by ITS. All lists are subject to the Yale University Information Technology Appropriate Use Policy in to and without reservation. Potential owners and subscribers must read this policy. List ownership or subscription constitutes an agreement to abide by Yale University policy. Lists which are not maintained properly, or which breach the University Appropriate Use Policy may be suspended or closed.
